Which Photo do you Choose?

When choosing a photograph for your ink and pencil drawing, the larger the original photo the more detail I can extract from it. If possible, do not send the toothy stuffy cheesy stiff-grinned school picture pose. Take the opportunity to use the once in a lifetime captured pose of them being them. A pouting mouth; a twinkling or magical look in their eyes; a moment in time expression; or other different or angled pose.

A photo taken in natural light will have better results than one taken where the subject's face is washed out by artificial flash.

If possible, send a photo image where one side of the face is distinctly darker than the other; this will give the pencil and ink portrait depth and form. But even a photo taken with a strong flash can be used to draw a good pencil portrait.

About the Artist

My art interest began when I was a young boy. At eight years old I won my first art contest. By the time I turned eleven, the Flint, Michigan Art Museum placed my work on their wall.  Today I have hung some of my recent pencil and ink drawings on this new medium called the Internet. I hope they bring you enjoyment. My pleasure came from drawing them. I am ready to draw yours too.

                                               LASTLY

When I draw a picture, I apply any means to achieve the wanted result. I may use ink or charcoal to complement the several shades of old-fashioned black graphite, a naturally occurring form of carbon that is not toxic or harmful. I shade with crosshatch, flat line, accent line, smudge, swipe, sweep, scribble, sketch, pointillism, and stroke. I utilize the graphite side, tip and every angle in-between, and often blend with my eraser. The results: you get is a fair priced drawing that you can frame, hang it on your living wall, stand two feet away, smile and say, “Yes, that’s her or him or it…I’m glad I bought it.” Then, many years from now, you can pass the art piece down to your heirs with the huge box of photos now stored on the top shelf of your closet.
